As soon as temperatures drop in New York, black leather jackets with matching booties and jeans storm the streets and become the go to uniform for most everyone in the city. A monochrome wardrobe certainly has its perks when you are half asleep and pulling pieces from the closet in a furious state to get out of the apartment (see me: most mornings). On the other hand, a closet full of almost entirely all black clothing can become quite boring. While an ongoing effort to pair down the objects I own and live a few steps closer to the Marie Kondo method, this post is about finding those pieces that, in Marie’s words, “spark joy.”
Joy in fashion, for me, equates to color…and LOTS of it.
I just can’t imagine waking up in a grumpy mood, slipping into a pair of bright red high-waisted trousers and maintaining that sour attitude for much longer. The city can get quite dreary and if a pair of pants can act as a temporary anti-depressant, sign me up. Pulling off any mix of bright colors may be a stretch for me, but implementing one or two of these pieces into my black on black on black wardrobe may be just what the doctor ordered. Even if it’s just a bright red lip to start. See my colorful picks below.
